Stories in the Shadows
When I was about 10, I created a short film of sorts out of a shoebox, a roll of plastic and a black felt-tip pen. I had recently learned that filmstrips are made with thousands of still photographs running in sequence across a projector. My little invention, while not all that sturdy, did manage to show my crude characters in motion, and I was hooked. I believe images can tell stories as beautifully as words, regardless of the genre or topic. This shot of my mother and her off-duty Navy pals after World War II in New Orleans, LA, speaks volumes. My mother is on the right. It was taken by Delores Paul, most likely in early 1946.
Often our best shots emerge from the spontaneous joys of unplanned lives.
